CRONOLOGÍA

1896
-Born in Buenos Aires on the 12th of August. Son of Antonio Enea Spilimbergo and Maria Giacoboni, Italian immigrants.

-During his early years lives in the location Palermo, Aráoz 3584.

1899-1901

Travels together with his mother and one of his brothers to North Italy, Piamonte, to visit his mother's relatives in Roverazza and San Sebastián Curone. There, suffers a pneumonia, which years later would turn into asthma. 

1902

-Comes back to Argentina. Lives in the street Paraguay 4137, Capital Federal.

1904-1908

-Goes to primary school at Colegio Salesiano “Don Bosco”, placed in Solís 252, and Escuela Superior de Varones Nº2 C. E. Nº3, placed in Mexico 1600.

1910

-Starts working temporarily in a shop: Gath & Chaves.

1911

-Works as a telephone operator during the night in the Unión Telefónica.

1912

-Enters the Empresa Nacional de Correos y Telégrafos, where he works until 1924.

1913

-Starts his art education in the Sociedad de Educación Industrial. Professional Technical Schools placed in Lavalle and Salguero. There, takes a course about ornamental drawing. 

1914

-Gets the Second Prize: “Premios Arturo Z. Paz” for the drawings made during the curse about ornamental drawing.

1915

-Enters the “Prilidiano Pueyrredón” National School of Fine Art. Ends the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of the career in 1915, the 5th one in 1916 and the 6th one in 1917.

1917

-His father dies on the 28th of September.

- Graduates from the “Prilidiano Pueyrredón” National School of Fine Arts as Drawing and                               Painting National Professor. Bigatti, Forner and Gigli are some of his partners. Pío Collivadino, Ernesto de la Cárcova and Carlos Pablo Ripamonte are part of his Professors.

1918

-Writes his Autobiografía (autobiography). Travels to paint to Mar del Plata. Practices the outside painting: works at the Bosques de Palermo and paints landscapes at the Maldonado brook. 

1919

-Starts sending his works to the National Hall.

1920

-Writes about his thoughts in a booklet El porvenir depende de uno mismo, in order to arrange and organize his life and work.

-The Salón Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Hall of Fine Arts) accepts, for the first time, one of his pieces.

1921

-Moves to a dry weather following doctor’s recommendation. Asks the mail company where he was working for his relocation in San Juan, Desamparados. He moves on the 28th of November, and stays living there until the 18th of September 1924.

-Has his first individual exhibition, San Juan, Argentina.

-Rehearses different art techniques, including sculpture.

1922

-Carries out new individual exhibitions in San Juan: Casa España “Etching, watercolors and oil paintings” San Juan, Argentina. Círculo de Armas, San Juan, Argentina.

- Etching First Prize. National Hall of Fine Art. Elemento de trabajo (Work element) and En invierno (In Winter). Etching. (Nº 234 and 235 cat. SNBA). Exhibits his oil Quietud del pastor in the National Hall.

1923

- Painting National Third Prize. National Hall of Fine Art. Seres humildes (Humble Beings), oil painting on canvas (Nº 137 of the catalog, room VII); with an award of $500. Exhibits in the National Hall the etching Fieles Compañeros. The first prize that year goes to Francisco Bernareghi for Sol de abril; the second prize goes to Lorenzo Gigli for Segadores. Two third prizes are given; one of them goes to Jorge Larco for Venus porteña.

1924

-Comes back to Buenos Aires on the 18th of September.

-Sends three pieces to the National Hall of Fine Art: Resignación, La bendición and Bordadora de frazadas.

1925

- Best Collection Unique Prize ($ 3.000). National Hall of Fine Art. Vieja Puyutana, oil painting on canvas; Descanso (Rest) oil painting on canvas; El Ciego (The Blind Man), oil painting on canvas; Paisaje Andino (Andean Landscape) (Nº of the cat. SNBA 199 to 202, in room V) The Honor Medal Prize is not agreed and the First Prize ($ 2.000) is given to Fray Guillermo Butler for his piece, Paisaje de Córdoba. 

- III Free Autumn Hall, La Plata. Painting Second Prize.

-Is invited to participate in the collective exhibition organized by the Universidad de La Plata, together with artists who were also prized in the National Hall. It is the First University Annual Hall, and he exhibits his oil paintings Descanso and Vieja puyutana and the etching Fieles Compañeros and Elementos de trabajo. The next year the exhibition would go round different European cities (Madrid, Paris, Venice, Milan, etc.)

-Using the money he won in the acquisition prize for El ciego ($ 2.000) he travels to Europe: sails from Buenos Aires on the 26 of October and arrives to Vigo on the 19 of November, in the vapor ship Monte Oliva.

1926

-Visits Florence, Venice, Palermo and other Italian cities searching for classic art sources. Revalues, with a modern study, the Renaissance past. He pays special attention to the frescos, maybe starting his muralist vocation.

-Moves to Paris, to the 7 of the rue Daguerre.

-Studies at André Lhote Academy double shift. Usually visits museums and expositions, building his iconographic ideas from the detailed observation and copy of past artists.

-Participates in the Argentine Artists Collective Exhibition, organized by the National University, La Plata. The exhibition is also presented in the Sociedad de Amigos del Arte de Madrid, using 7 rooms: the Jeu De Paume (Paris); the Berizza Palace, Antiguo Coleggio delle arti, Venice; Villa Borghese, Aranciera dei giarini del lago, Rome (between January and March of this year)

1927

-During the time he remains in Europe he sends pieces to argentine halls. Painting Acquisition First Prize. IV Santa Fe Annual Hall. Descanso (Rest), oil painting on canvas.

-Sends two pieces to the National Hall of Fine Arts: Composición (composition) and Comiendo (eating).

1928

-In August he participates in the collective exhibition organized by Bigatti and Butler in the Asociación de Amigos del Arte de Buenos Aires, named Group of Vanguard Painters, together with: Badi, Basaldúa, Berni and Butler. They use rooms I, II and III in the space placed in Florida street. He exhibits watercolors, pencil drawings, etchings and an ink drawing.

-Leaves Hamburg on October 31 in the vapor ship Monte Cervantes. Returns to Argentina and moves to Las Lomitas, San Juan.

-Sends two oil paintings on canvas to the National Hall of Fine Arts: Meditando and Pueblo piamontés.

1929

-His son Antonio is born on the 31st of March, in San Juan.

-Sends pieces to the Salón de Acuarelistas, Pastelistas y Grabadores (May).

-Is invited to participate, together with a group of recognized modern painters, in the opening exhibition in the Sala de Exposiciones de la Asociación Wagneriana de Buenos Aires (Florida 936). The organizer of the area is Alfredo Guttero.

-Painting First Prize. XI Rosario Municipal Hall. Paisaje de San Juan (San Juan Landscape), oil painting on canvas. Gold Medal, Diploma and a $ 6.000 prize (August).

-Participates in the New Hall, collective exhibition in the Asociación Amigos del Arte (September). The aim of the exhibition is to put together artists with a unique plastic interest. Amongst the artists who take part in the exhibition there can be named: Alfredo Guttero, Pedro Figari, Xul Solar, Juan del Prete, Ramón Gomez Cornet, Norah Borges, Horacio Butler, Emilio Pettoruti and Raquel Forner.

-Sends the oils Composición and Paisaje to the XIX National Hall of Fine Arts.

-The Municipal Commission of Fine Art of Rosario invites him to the New Hall and presents in it’s rooms 141 pieces (paintings and sculptures) from different artists: Spilimbergo, Xul Solar, Raquel Forner, Alfredo Guttero, Luis Falcini, Alfredo Bigatti, amongst others (October). The Córdoba and Santa Fe Commissions require the exhibition.

-II Sala de Amigos del Arte de Buenos Aires. Exhibits gouaches and monotypes. Presents the series of monotypes: Los politicos, La huida and Día Festivo (October).

1930

-Moves to Buenos Aires, lives in Obligado 4131, Capital Federal, Argentina.

-On the 7th of October the Municipal Commission of Fine Art of Rosario acquires the piece Figura for $150.

-Special Guest in the Art Hall, Rosario, where he exhibits Naturaleza Muerta (August).

-First Annual Hall of Modern Painters, in the Sala de la Asociación Wagneriana de Buenos Aires. The Hall includes pieces of Guttero, Spilimbergo, Forner and Badi, amongst others (December).

1931

-Individual Exhibition in the Hall of the Asociación de Amigos del Arte de Buenos Aires. Exhibits oils, gouches, drawings and monotypes (August).

Collective Exhibitions:

-Argentine artists in Montevideo, Uruguay.

-First Municipal Hall, Bahia Blanca (April).

-Sends pieces to the XVII Salón de Acuarelistas, Pastelistas y Aguafuertistas (May).

-Sends the controversial oil on canvas, Figura, to the XXI National Hall of Fine Arts (September).

-The Provincial Museum of Fine Art of Córdoba, leaded by Antonio Pedone, incorporates young artists’ pieces: Spilimbergo, Gigli and Fioravanti (September).

-Because of the general disagreement caused by the exclusion of Spilimbergo’ piece, Figura, from the official recognition of the National Hall Prizes, a group of artists- amongst them Bigatti, Forner, Guttero, Pettoruti, Collivadino, Coppola, Centurión, Larco, de Ferrari, Romero Brest, Donnís, Girondo- organize a Tribute to Spilimbergo, where the piece is acquired and donated to the National Museum of Fine Art, repairing what it was consider to be official indifference (November).

1932

-Moves to the street Correa 3065, Capital Federal.

-In January, the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts of Córdoba acquires for $450 his piece, Figura.

-In July, presents the scenery for the choreographic poem La Conquista, from the musician Vicente Forte, in Lima, Peru.

-El comercio, Lima’s newspaper, announces the next premier for July, in the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires.

Collective Exhibitions:

-Signo, in the Castelar Hotel: Pettoruti, Spilimbergo, De Larrañaga, Gómez Cornet and the sculptor Musso (May).

-XVIII Watercolorist Hall (July).

-Sends pieces to the XXII National Hall of Fine Arts (September).

-Invited by the jury of the Salón del Cincuentenario de la Ciudad de La Plata, participates with three pieces in the commemorative hall. The invited artists are: Spilimbergo, Forner, Guttero, Butler, Badi, Bigatti, amongst others. The art critic Córdoba Iturburu says to the newspaper Crítica that the collection was brilliant and it represented the New Art. The presence in the Hall included the pieces acquisition by the Provincial Museum of Fine Art, La Plata. 

-On December 23rd, is invited to participate in the Argentine Etching Exhibition in New York.

1933

-Creates, together with Antonio Sibelino and Luis Falcini, the Sindicato de Artistas Plásticos (May). Donates a painting to raffle for the benefit of the syndicate in November. Antonio Sibellino, Pompeyo Audivert, Juan Carlos Castagnino and other artists donate pieces as well.

-Relates to the Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, who arrives to Buenos Aires invited by the Asociación de Amigos del Arte. Together, they produce a collective piece in less than three months, the mural Plastic duties, at Mr. Natalio Botana’s country house (Director of the Newspaper Crítica) in Don Torcuato. Berni, Castagnino and Lázaro work together with Spilimbergo and Siqueiros. After the experience, Spilimbergo tells the newspaper Crítica that the experience was decisive in his life. During the month of November photographs of the Plastic duties are exhibit in the Colegio Libre de Estudios Superiores (Belgrano 1700).

Collective Exhibitions:

-Argentine Etchers in New York, United States.

-Exhibition of the First Group pf Argentine Painters, organized by the Italian Cultural Institute, in Rome, Florence, Venice, Geneva and Milan. Sponsored by Italian and Argentine governments (since January). The exhibition spreads argentine art and sells the pieces. Spilimbergo presents: Paisaje de Buenos Aires and Calle de San Juan. 

-XIX Watercolorist Hall, participates with Figuras (June).

-Modern Painters and Sculptors Hall in the Amigos del Arte. Participate amongst others: Spilimbergo, Emilio Centurión, Juan del Prete, Ernesto Scotti, Pedro Dominguez Neira and Emilio Pettoruti (June).

-Collective Exhibition in Galería Müller, Buenos Aires, together with Beristayn, Centurión, Cúnsolo, Lía Correa Morales, Guido, Gigli, De Ferrari, Dominguez Neira, Pedone, A. Rossi, Jorge Soto Acebal, Victorica, Vidal and Ana Weiss (July).

-Painting First National Prize.  XXIII National Hall of Fine Art. Naturaleza Muerta (Still life), oil painting on wood.

-The muralist group: Siqueiros, Spilimbergo, Berni, Castagnino and Lázaro, make an exhibition with original cartels, multi-exemplars and scenery-photographs, about social issues (November).

1934

-Professor at the Argentine Institute of Graphic Art until 1939.

-On February 3rd is invited to participate in the Diccionario Enciclopédico Abreviado of Espasa-Calpe.

-Participates in the Modern Painters Hall in Amigos del Arte, with three unpublished pieces, together with Dominguez Neira, Centurión, Victorica, Pettoruti, Butler, amongst others (May).

-Collection First Prize ($ 300). XX Hall of Watercolorist. Jóven vendedor (Young Salesman), Figura (Figure), Naturaleza Muerta (Still life).

-Participates with Figura (temple), in the XI Hall Rosa Galisteo Rodriguez, Santa Fe.

-Participates in the II Art Hall of La Plata; the Provincial Commission of Fine Art acquires his temple Figura for $500 (September).

-Is invited as an Official Painting Jury, together with Lía Correa Morales de Espinosa Viale and Pedro Dominguez Neira, in the XXIV Art Hall. National Direction of Fine Art (August).

-Participates with his oils Espera and La calle, in the XXIV National Hall of Fine Art.

1935

-Painting and drawing Professor at the “Prilidiano Pueyrredón” National School of Fine Art until 1948.

Collective Exhibitions:

-International Exhibition in the Carnegie de Pittsburg Institute, with the presence of 126.000 people. Presents his Terraza con figuras.

-Exhibition in Amigos del Arte, Seven Argentine Painters (Badi, Basaldúa, Berni, Butles, Gómez Cornet, Pettoruti, Spilimbergo) (August).

-Participates in the Hall of Modern Art, in Amigos del Arte.

-His prized piece Naturaleza muerta is exposed in the XXV National Hall of Fine Art, commemorating the Hall’s 25 years of existence, together with other prized pieces. Sends to the National Hall Figuras.

-Starts working on the monotype series: Breve Historia de Emma.

1936

-Paints the piece El escultor, which he keeps to himself because he considers it one of his masterpieces.

-Is invited to represent the National Direction of Fine Art in the III Exhibition of Prized Pieces, in the XXVI Hall of Fine Arts, Córdoba.

-Participates in the contest, on the 26 of October, for the Drawing and Painting subjects in the National School of Fine Art.

-Is invited to participate in the Painters Hall, organized by Amigos del Arte, with three pieces (May).

-Receives a request to give up on the piece that was sent to Pittsburg.

1937

-Illustrates Oliverio Girondo’s book “Interlunio” (Interlude).

1938

 -Moves to his house-atelier placed in Guayra 3818, Capital Federal, Argentina.

-On the 25th of September he is invited to teach in the Tomas Frías University, Fine Art Academy of Potosi, Bolivia.

-On the 17th of October he is named Honorable Associate in the Artists Union, Free Painters of La Sierra de Potosi, Bolivia.

-On the 26 of December the Honorable Concejo Deliberante de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires acquires his etching, Figuras, for $120.

1940

-Travels to Bolivia.

-Visits Chilecito, La Rioja.

1942

-On the 27th of November receives $250 as a payment for the drawings that would illustrate Baudelaire’s book “Les fleurs du mal”, from Libreros Editores Viau S.R.L.

1943

-Painting and Drawing Professor at the Superior School of Fine Art, dependent on the University if La Plata until 1945

-On March 20 the Provincial Museum of Fine Art “Rosa Galisteo de Rodríguez” of Santa Fe invites him to the inaugural contest of the new building, as the Honor Guest in the XX Annual Hall.

-On May 27, the Municipal Museum Fernando Fader of Godoy Cruz acquires the piece Figura for $300.

-On May 28, he is invited as a painting jury in the XXII Hall of Rosario, Cultural Municipal Direction, Municipal Museum of Fine Art “Juan B. Castagnino”, together with Horacio Butler and Miguel Carlos Victorica.

-On June 23, the Riverside Museum of New York, acquires two of his etchings: Retrato and Dos mujeres.

-The Amigos del Arte of Montevideo acquires the piece El Vesubio for $150 (Uruguay money).

-On August 5th, the National Commission of Fine Art invites his to participate as a jury in the Annual Painting Hall of Fine Arts, together with Rodolfo Franco, Raúl Mazza and Adolfo Bellocq.

-On September 8, the National Academy of Fine Art invites him to participate in the English magazine, The Studio, in an article that deals about Argentine plastic art.
